Setting up Apple Devices for HDR

How do I setup my iPad, iPhone and/or Apple TV for a successful HDR ClearView Flex session?

Updated yesterday

Supported iOS Devices

  • iPad Pro (2021 5th Generation / 12.9" model only)

  • iPhone 11 Pro

  • iPhone 12 (base model as well as Mini / Pro / Pro Max)

  • iPhone 13 (base model as well as Mini / Pro / Pro Max)

  • iPhone 14-16 (all models)

  • Apple TV (2nd Generation 4K model only, 2017 or later)

From the presenter screen, select the input type as HDR in the settings menu.

Once a viewer has joined an HDR session from one of the supported devices, they can toggle between the two input formats:

  • Auto - Rec2020 HDR10, including P3 content in Rec2020 container

  • P3 - HDR - Content natively in P3-D65 HDR

By default the stream will be set to Auto. To change the format please tap on the screen, then swipe the bottom left corner to toggle between Auto and P3 - HDR

Lastly, we recommend the following settings on the iOS device to ensure the best picture quality

  • 40-50% brightness

  • True Tone off

  • Night Shift off

  • Automatic brightness off

  • Dark mode on

HDR versus SDR in Flex

(sharper colors and more texture)

Please note, when joining a session on an iOS device, your mail client may default to opening the session in the browser if the default browser is set to Chrome. You can change your default browser back to Safari if this problem persists. Alternatively, you can enter the session ID and authentication PIN listed in your email invite to join the session.

  • Recommended: Ethernet connected

  • Recommended: Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable

How to Setup Your Apple TV

You should configure your Apple TV to be in HDR mode (not Dolby Vision HDR) and for the refresh rate to match the frame.

By default your Apple TV will be set to 4K HDR (HDR 10). You should change the resolution to 1080p. The refresh rate is also set to 60 (59.94Hz) or 50 depending on your region. It’s fine to run at this refresh rate, but if you want true 24fps, for example, then you should switch to 24Hz.

Here is an example of how to set your dynamic range on your Apple TV to be HDR and to match a source frame rate of 24fps for true 24fps.

  1. Open the settings App from the main menu

    Apple TV settings
  2. In settings, click on the “Video and Audio” menu entry

  3. Click the format menu entry and scroll down to the bottom. Click “Other Formats”

  4. Scroll down to the bottom to select 1080p HDR 24hz

  5. Confirm the new setting by clicking “OK”. Your screen might turn black for a few seconds depending on what it was previously configured to.
