What are the recommended device to use for the HDR review sessions?

We suggest using the following devices to get the best quality and luminance out of HDR remote live-streaming.

HDR Apple TV app

Preferred HDR Apple TV device

  • Apple TV 4K (2021)

Other HDR Apple TV devices

  • Apple TV 4K (2017) -- works with some content, but the A10 chipset is slower than the A12 in the 2021 model and manifests as frame skips in high action content.
    ​HDR iPad or iPhone app

Preferred - display capable of accurate HDR reproduction

1600 nits +

  • ​iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation) or newer

1200 nits +

  • ​iPhone 11 Pro / Pro Max or newer

  • iPhone 12 / Plus or newer

Not recommended - HDR10 and P3 gamut, but limited by display capability:

600 nits +

  • iPhone SE (2nd generation)

  • iPhone 11

  • iPhone XS / XS Max

  • iPhone XR

  • iPhone X

  • iPhone 8 / 8 Plus

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd / 4th generation)
