Setting Up Autodownloader in FileRunner

A quick guide to setting up Autodownloader on your MacOS device

Updated over a week ago

What is Autodownloader

Autodownloader is a MacOS program that allows verified users in FileRunner to link an API key to their account in order to automatically download packages that are sent to them. As well as providing automation, Autodownloader provides an accelerated download and the unpacking of .tar files as part of the initial download so can help to significantly reduce transfer times. All packages downloaded through Autodownloader will be logged in the account activity just like any other package downloaded in FileRunner.

Getting the Client

Please contact your Customer Success Manager or Sohonet support to provide you with the latest version of FileRunner Autodownloader. Our 24/7 support team can be reached here.

Installing the Autodownloader Client

1. Download the DMG file onto the Mac computer you are planning to use.

2. Open the DMG and then select the package to install. (Right Click, Open With, Installer should be used to install the package with normal security settings on modern macOS).

3. In certain cases, like writing to a mounted network drive, you must manually give Full Disk Access to the auto_download executable (/Users/<username>/Library/FileRunner-Auto-Dowload/filerunner-autodl/auto_download). This happens in recent versions of macOS, and it can be done in "System Preferences'' --> "Privacy & Security."

Account Setup

1. Once installed, select Applications, FileRunner, Open FileRunner Auto Download, which will launch your browser on the config screen.

2. In another tab on your browser, login to FileRunner as the user you want to associate with the Autodownloader.

3. Once fully logged in head to the user profile section and select the API Keys tab as illustrated below.

4. Enter a meaningful name in the API Key Name section and click Generate Key. Copy the API key generated to your paste buffer.

Please copy the API key immediately as you will not be able to access it again.

5. Back on the auto-download tab, enter your username (e.g. firstname-lastname) and the API key. Your Username can be found in the API Keys tab. Please note - API Keys and your FileRunner Username are required for Autodownloader.

6. If you have a folder in mind for the package downloads, enter it in place of the default. We don't have a picker yet, so navigate to the folder in Finder, right click on the folder icon and then press alt (Option) and then select 'Copy .... as pathname', you can then paste in the full pathname.

7. Once you add the account, it will then download packages that are sent to the linked user.

8. Older packages are not downloaded by default, but you can force them to download if needed.
